Ukrainian (Українська)

Ukrainian is spoken by over forty million people, mainly in the western and central parts of the Ukraine. Ukrainian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet and is similar to Russian. The Ukraine became a Christian state in AD 988. The first parts of the Bible in Ukrainian were produced in the sixteenth century. Translations were produced in 1903, 1926 and 1957. The most widely used Bible is the 1962 translation by Metropolitan Ohienko. Most Ukrainian speaking Christians are Orthodox, with Uniate (eastern rite Catholics) and Protestant minorities. Ukraine regained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. Bible work is done by the Ukrainian Bible Society.
